Organization

Aren't these the prettiest file folders you've ever seen?

I’ve been trying really hard to get a good organization system going at our house. We have a lot of clutter for just the two of us, and neither of us are naturally organized people. I tend to drop my stuff wherever I feel like it when I get home and deal with it later. We put the mail wherever we feel like it, etc.

One of the things I’ve done is dumped a few of our kitchen drawers- the ones that get the most cluttery and I find myself shoving closed- into boxes. After we use something from the box, we clean it and put it away in the drawer. Whatever we haven’t used in a month goes in a garage sale box. I’ll look through the box to make sure there aren’t things that we normally used that we just didn’t, but I’m determined to get rid of stuff. I also have a “garage sale box” in our dining room that I add to quite often to get rid of stuff we don’t use.

I bought a pretty canister to go on my counter top to put the frequently-used utensils in, spatulas, etc. I used a gift card to Crate and Barrel for that from last year’s teacher appreciation. I knew I was saving it for something special, and when I got there and shopped around, I knew that’s what I was waiting for!

Because of my profession, I need to keep receipts, especially if I bought something for school or a housing expense. I found gorgeous file folders at an office supply store. I like the folders enough that they can stay on my counter all the time, by where I keep my frequently-used cookbooks. That way, instead of a pile of paper on the counter waiting for me, I can pop them right into the correct file folders. It’s much more fun to use them when they are pretty. The best part- I had a gift certificate, and a coupon, so I bought a few things I needed for school and only had to spend a few bucks of my own.

The biggest challenge to this whole getting-organized thing has been trying to get Jeff to buy into it. But, it will all get there eventually.

I found this blog over Christmas break, and it has really been inspiring me to get our house in shape. I love the author’s style, and she has really great ideas. Let me know what you think if you check her out!

We’re getting our house painted! We’re going a little darker with dark brown trim. The colors are cocoa truffle and bittersweet brown. Do paint names get any better than that? More pics to come!

Snow Days

Our nice clean living room

We’ve been off of school this week because of cold and snow. No, Minnesota people, it’s not that cold. We’ve had highs in the single digits or teens all week, tomorrow the high is supposedly 0. It is so funny to me that we’re out of school for a whole week for what would be considered “normal” Minnesota weather. The main road next to our house is in pretty good shape, so I might try to get out and about tomorrow a little bit.

I believe we had two snow days built in, so I’m not quite sure when we’ll make up the three that are left- not to mention any additional snow days we might have! I can’t decide if I would rather make them up over Spring break or at the end of the year. Leave your opinion in the comments!

So, I’ve gotten a bunch of school stuff done, cleaned the house, caught up on laundry, etc. It feels really good to sit in a clean house! The Christmas decorations are all down and waiting to be boxed up downstairs. Even the closets are straightened up! This day should go down in history!

The clean kitchen!

I know, I know…

I know it has been way too long since I’ve posted. I’ve been busy with stuff around the house and, or course, school stuff. I try not to complain but having an hour of planning time a week can really wear a person down!
Let’s see… Since I’ve posted last….
My friend Christopher from college visited and we did a bit of a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives tour eating at two places featured on the show. I don’t think I would make a huge point to go to either place again.
I helped to plan and execute the greatest Grandparents Day ever at my school, although I’m a little biased since this is the only one I’ve really taken the lead on.
I am in charge of Operation Christmas Child at church and have been working to publicize this to the congregation. I’m already thinking ahead to next year and how to make it even bigger and better. It’s been really well received except some criticism that it’s not a Lutheran organization. Oh well. We’re all Christians working to spread the gospel. Denominational lines do not matter, in my opinion. (From the Lutheran who married a Baptist…)
I’ve given up a bit of Friday Wine as I’d have a glass and fall asleep on Friday nights. I’m usually worn out from the week by Friday and the wine was definitely accelerating my bedtime. Plus, my mother-in-law was worried that I was posting too many pictures of alcohol on my blog. 🙂
Yesterday we spent a bunch of time cleaning up the beautiful yellow blanket of leaves covering our lawn. The picture below was taken at least a week ago. All of the leaves have blown off of the burning bush now, but it was pretty while it lasted.
Coming up this week is the school auction. It will definitely keep things very busy throughout the week!

For those of you that are wondering, we’re planning on coming to MN for Christmas on New Year’s Eve and staying until January 3rd.

Our beautiful burning bush adds a splash of color to the front of our home.

Simple Saturday

This past week was a relatively uneventful one for me, but there is a little excitement around.

On Wednesday, my friend Amanda (roommate at Seward) had her second adorable baby girl. I went to the hospital to meet baby Macy on Thursday. Amanda is in much the same situation as I am- in Kansas City without anyone but her immediate family and, of course, her church/school family. I’m lucky enough to have a handful of in-laws close by. I know that when Jeff and I have kids I will really need the support of my extended “family” so I am trying to do the same for her.

After a few good weeks I had a really, really bad week at WW so I took a little time today to refocus. I actually wrote down some goals and put them on my mirror in the bedroom and on the fridge in the kitchen. I made a list of things I can do instead of eat when I’m not hungry to stare me in the face when I go to open the fridge. I’m hoping that will help! I just finished my ninth week of working out five days a week, but I need to pick up my intensity a little bit.

On Friday I had my first-ever coaching experience with the girls’ volleyball teams from school. The normal coaches are out of town so the principal and I filled in. I really sat on the bench and marked serves, so I didn’t do much. But I had a lot of feelings of “If I were the coach…..” and then I remember that I DON’T have time for that! I don’t really disagree with what the current coaches are teaching the girls, but I know I would do things very differently. And, volleyball is the only sport I know anything about in the least and the current coaches are here to stay for a long while.

When I got home from the games Jeff had a glass of wine waiting for me. This bottle of chardonnay was a housewarming gift from his friend Leroy. It was pretty yummy!

Today has been a perfect Saturday. Jeff made a delicious breakfast of ham and eggs this morning. The weather is gorgeous. We bought some grass seed to over-seed our lawn and mulch to make things look nice. We also bought some mums. Indoor kitchen herb-growing kits were deeply clearanced so I thought I’d give it a shot even though it is not quite the right time of year to do that. We’re heading out to work in the yard in a little while. What satisfaction taking care of our home can bring!

They have a way to go, but these mums should be gorgeous soon!
